Hello again,
Time for another Big Q Cassette Classic. The summer of 1989 was a good time. I was alive, bonus, and I was actually making a living in radio. It was my first summer as a full time announcer. My shift was from Midnight to 6am. I woke up in the afternoon. My days were filled with movies, since matinees were cheap. That summer was a big one for movies. The original Batman with Michael Keaton came out, along with Lethal Weapon 2, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Weekend at Bernies. But the best movie of the year was from Weird Al…UHF. It was just the right amount of weird to be a cult classic. All summer long everyone at the broadcasting school was walking around saying…”Spatula City, Spatula City”.
In 1989, a weird little song from a cute girl took over the airwaves. Martika, “Toy Soldier” had a poppy sound, but a dark undertone. That combination, along with the good looks of the artist launch the song all the way to the top of the charts. It’s arguably one of the best “one hit wonders” to ever hit the airwaves, and it’s Big Q Cassette Classic. Line em’ up, knock em’ down. It’s time to play with your Toy Soldiers”.
