Kim Mitchell
Go for a soda
Hey der, Big Q back with another Cassette Classic. Growing up in northern North Dakota we were able to pick up a lot of Canadian radio stations. One of the many great songs we heard that folks’ down south missed out on was Kim Mitchell’s “Go for a Soda”.
Now, being a fat man, one of my favorite sugar highs was pop, or soda. So here was a song saying i should go get a pop. The meaning itself was probably more “deep” than that, but in 1984, i was as far from “deep” as a teenager could get.
When it came to pop, or soda, i drank the most at the Grand parents’ farm. They didn’t have fresh water. It was salt water from the tap. For drinking water they had to go into town and pick it up and haul it back. So drinking water was in short supply. God help you if you drank the last bit before they were able to make coffee. You might as well just go to the ditch and dig your own grave next to all the dead dogs and cats. This is why there was plenty of Shasta in the pantry. Mmmm. Shasta cola. Screw you Coke and Pepsi. There’s nothing better than Shasta.
Songs spark memories. The grandparents are all gone, and the farmhouse is no more. And to be honest, my body can no longer tolerate pop. But when I think about it, memories of hanging out at the farm, tipping back a cold Shasta, always “pop” up. For that reason alone, this song will always be a Cassette Classic.
Here is Kim Mitchell and “go for a soda”, a Big Q Cassette Classic.
