BIG Q CASSETTE CLASSIC
TOMMY CONWELL AND THE YOUNG RUMBLERS
“I’M NOT YOUR MAN”
Hello again, it’s Big Q with a Cassette Classic. The year was 1988. The first George Bush was elected President, I graduated from Broadcasting School and got my first job. Michael Jackson farted out the 5th number one song from his LP Bad, called “Dirty Diana” and we all barfed in our mouths a little bit. Steve Winwood’s “Roll With It” was the biggest song of the year, but my favorite number one song has been lost to time and dead air. Who remembers Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumbler’s?
“I’m Not Your Man” hit the top of the rock charts and made me smile. I was still a young man and suffered from the brain washing of the horny youth. Say whatever you need to, to get the panties to drop. Then here comes Tommy Conwell with his 4-minute rant on how this woman needs to jump through all these hoops to be with him. And how she should just move on because “I’m not your man”.
Up till then I’d never thought of trying the reverse psychology on the opposite sex. It never occurred to me that maybe a woman didn’t want to be right all the time, that maybe she was looking for someone to call her on her crap. Well, I still looked like I looked. I still lived paycheck to paycheck. So, disagreeing and corrected woman didn’t lure them in, it just kept me out of the “friend zone” as well as the “sex zone”. And in the end I just sang this song in my car as loud as I could while driving down the street.
A true Cassette Classic, Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumblers, “I’m Not Your Man”.
