BIG Q CASSETTE CLASSIC
AQUA
BARBIE GIRL
I’m a big fan of imagination. It’s like an instrument. The more you use it, the better you get with it. Kids have the best imagination because until they learn to communicate with the people around them, they have to make up friends and companions.
I grew up fat, so a lot of times I would find myself alone so my imagination was a little stronger than others my age. I always appreciated a good image from someone. There was a time in 1997, around my 30th birthday, I was very social, actually found myself talking to real people. Weird, I know. I also found my imagination skills slipping, but then I heard a song that I could really appreciate.
The group Aqua came out with the song “Barbie Girl”. They imagined if Barbie were real and how she would feel. From Ken pulling up asking if she wants to go for a ride, or her reveling in her world of plastic. Go ahead and brush her hair, undress her anywhere. You can touch, you can play, as long as you say I’m always yours.
It drove people crazy. You either loved it, or loathed it, no in-between. I saw two women sing it together while they undressed, so, yea, it’ll always hold a special place in my imagination.
Truth be told…I had a tough time with the song because of the high-pitched voice. But then I worked my imagination a bit. It was a fantastic Pop Song. Even if you hate it, it’s still catchy. And if you hated it, then odds are if you died and went to hell, you might have to sing it for all eternity. And since it’s a catchy pop song, even the Devil might find himself singing along. What would that sound like? Since I worked in radio and access to production tools, I pitched the voice down to “Satan” level, and it turns out it really makes for a kick-ass devil song. Come on Barbie, lets go party. It was this pitched down version I consider a Big Q Cassette Classic.
